“Just as love to God begins with listening to His Word, so the beginning of love for the brethren is learning to listen to them. It is God’s love for us that He not only gives us His Word but also lends us His ear.”
Sometimes the most effective way to help someone is simply to listen. Listening prevents filling in the blanks with assumptions. It offers value and presumes dignity. Listening communicates honor and respect. It’s the key to understanding.
If you are seeking to serve others, you will encounter situations that are unfamiliar and decisions you may never have to make. Listening begets a meaningful response. It encourages openness and honesty.
The ability to listen doesn’t always come naturally. It takes practice and discipline. It requires humility. When you think you have all the answers, rather than offer your opinion, first, listen.
