40 Days of Life | Day 35 | Goodness Beauty Truth

Whether we acknowledge it, our souls long for goodness, beauty and truth.

We recognized it when we see it, and might feel chaos when it’s missing. Things of this nature point outward and upward bringing a sense of awe to the beholder. They invite a pause, a time for contemplation and reflection, awakening the longing for eternity. This is Notre Dame Cathedral.

Hearts are troubled amid this tragedy. Losing something extraordinary during a season of turmoil is poignant. Why here? Why this? Why now?

Yet for a moment there’s a sense of solidarity.

The pain of loss is common to all. It unifies and evokes compassion. It’s a reminder to hold on to what’s precious and show gratitude for what remains.

I can’t help but think of the season we are in. Lent begins: ashes to ashes, dust to dust. And this tragic fire falls at the start of Holy Week. This week we remember the end of Jesus’ ministry on earth, his life, death and resurrection. We think about his suffering and the injustice of the crucifixion.

As the Author of goodness, beauty and truth tastes death, darkness, pure darkness covers the earth.

I know Sunday is coming, but it is not here yet. For now, I see the darkness, it can’t be avoided. Answers are unclear but a God who empathizes with our suffering is undeniable.
